The Rotary Club of Garki, in collaboration with the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), Society for Family Health, and Aleyita Health Center, organized a free medical outreach for over 200 residents of Aleyita Community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The club president, Dr. Rotarian Joachim Ezeji, KSM, highlighted that the initiative aimed to reduce maternal and child mortality, especially for underserved communities, as part of Rotary Family Health Day. Ezeji emphasized that the outreach was designed to educate pregnant women with essential health tips, helping them ensure safe deliveries. He also mentioned that the outreach was targeted at low-income earners in the community who lack access to basic healthcare services.
“The free medical outreach provided crucial health services such as malaria screening, blood pressure checks, HIV testing, deworming for children, and eye exams for pregnant women,” Ezeji said. He noted that this annual program is part of Rotary’s mission to give back to society and improve public health. “When the people are healthy, the nation is healthy,” he added.
Ezeji stressed that healthcare is a top priority for the Rotary Club of Garki, which remains passionate about improving the well-being of the community.
The Chairman of the Rotary Family Health Days Committee, Julius Akwashiki, pointed out that the program’s target beneficiaries included unregistered pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, children aged 1-5 years, and their families. The outreach aims to provide low-cost and free healthcare to underserved areas in the FCT.
“Nigeria continues to have one of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in Africa, with many cases occurring in rural areas lacking healthcare access,” Akwashiki said.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Halima Dauda, expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club for the medical assistance and health education, noting that the outreach exposed them to valuable tips that would help them during pregnancy. She also promised to use the provided medications effectively.
