Carter served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981 and was the first president to visit Nigeria.
His 1978 visit strengthened U.S.-Nigeria relations, emphasizing mutual respect and collaboration.
Beyond his presidency, Carter dedicated his life to humanitarian work, founding The Carter Center, which focuses on global health and conflict resolution. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
The U.S. Embassy in Abuja highlighted Carter’s role in strengthening U.S.-Nigeria ties: “His visit to Nigeria symbolized a shared commitment to democratic principles and mutual respect.”
