The House of Representatives has expressed deep concern over the growing number of “one chance” criminal operations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), condemning the escalating insecurity in the nation’s capital.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, lawmakers directed the relevant committees to engage with the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, the FCT Police Commissioner, and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to address the alarming situation. The move follows the tragic killing of Miss Nimah Sulaiman, who fell victim to “one chance” operators on October 17, 2024.

The House’s resolution was prompted by a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Ismail Haruna Dabo, a lawmaker representing Toro Federal Constituency of Bauchi State. Miss Sulaiman, Dabo’s Legislative Aide, was kidnapped and later killed despite a ransom being paid.

House of Representatives Makes Urgent Call for Action

The House further mandated its Committee on FCT to investigate the growing use of unregistered and unpainted taxis within the capital, which have become an avenue for criminal activity. The investigation will also focus on the broader issue of kidnapping and armed robbery across Abuja. The committee has been given three weeks to report its findings.

Dabo expressed his deep concern over the surge in crime, particularly by “one chance” operators. He highlighted the increasing incidents of kidnappings and armed robberies, both in the city center and remote suburbs. According to him, the rise of unregistered taxis in Abuja has made it easier for criminals to operate undetected, posing a significant threat to the safety of residents.

A Tragic Loss

Miss Sulaiman’s kidnapping occurred at Bannex Junction, Wuse 2, as she was on her way home to Jahi District around 6:15 p.m. Despite her family paying the ransom in full, her body was discovered between 9 and 10 p.m. at the Maitama/Minister’s Hill Bridge, sending shockwaves through the community.

Dabo emphasized that this tragic incident highlights the worsening security situation in the FCT, stressing the urgent need for lawmakers to take action and ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
