Two lives were lost and two others were critically injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion at the Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School in Kuchibuyi Village, Byazhin area of Abuja.
The incident occurred around 11:00 AM on January 6, 2025.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed that the explosion resulted from the accidental detonation of an IED brought to the school by three men.
Two of the men lost their lives, while the third man and a female trader sustained severe injuries. Emergency responders swiftly evacuated the victims, who are currently receiving medical attention under police guard.
SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the Command’s Bomb Squad recovered remnants of the explosive device from the scene, confirming the nature of the incident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that three men, believed to be residents of Katsina, visited the school owner, Mallam Adamu Ashimu, shortly before the explosion. Mallam Ashimu is currently in police custody for further questioning.
The swift response involved operatives from the Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, the Kubwa Area Command, and local authorities, who cordoned off the area to ensure public safety and facilitate the investigation.
FCT Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu expressed condolences to the bereaved families and urged heightened public vigilance. He emphasized the importance of immediately reporting suspicious activities or objects resembling explosive devices to law enforcement agencies.
The incident has raised serious concerns about safety in schools and public spaces within the community. Local leaders and parents have called for enhanced security measures to prevent future occurrences.
