US President Joe Biden delivered his farewell speech from the Oval Office on Wednesday night. he extended his best wishes to President-elect Donald Trump and voiced concerns about the state of American democracy.
Biden used the platform to reflect on his administration’s successes and the nation’s pressing challenges.
Celebrating Diplomatic and Domestic Achievements
Biden opened by spotlighting a recent diplomatic breakthrough—a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Brokered with support from the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, the truce reflects the administration’s commitment to global peace.
He also outlined key domestic achievements, including economic recovery from the pandemic, job creation, and environmental initiatives. Biden emphasized his administration’s strides in combating climate change, noting that these measures also generated employment. Internationally, he credited his leadership with strengthening NATO, ensuring Ukraine’s resilience in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Democracy Under Threat
While highlighting progress, Biden warned of growing threats to democracy. He condemned the concentration of wealth and power, describing an emerging oligarchy as a danger to equality and freedom. He also criticized the rollback of fact-checking programs by tech giants, such as Meta’s decision to discontinue its initiative, highlighting the harmful impact of misinformation on public discourse.
The erosion of a free press and the proliferation of misinformation were also addressed, with Biden urging greater accountability from social media platforms to preserve democratic integrity.
Reflecting on his 50-year political career, Biden thanked the American people and Vice President Kamala Harris for their support. He described his service as a privilege and reiterated the need for collective action to address ongoing challenges.
