Passengers are increasingly alarmed by soaring Abuja to Lagos Flight airfares, with one-way tickets now ranging from N109,000 to N369,000.
A recent check revealed that Arik Air is charging between N151,000 and N175,000 for flights on Friday, October 25, a peak travel period, while Air Peace fares fall between N151,000 and N369,000. For those opting for Business Class on Arik, prices can reach up to N361,000.
While Arik Air and Air Peace dominate the conversation about rising prices, they are not alone in this trend. Other airlines, including Virgin Air, United Nigeria, Ibom Air, and Aero Contractors, also have fares ranging from N100,000 to N174,000.
Factors Affecting Abuja to Lagos Flight Price
Airline operators cite several factors contributing to the price hikes, including volatile exchange rates, skyrocketing aviation fuel costs, increasing fees from aviation agencies, and frequent delays from air traffic control. These issues not only raise fuel consumption but also strain operational costs. The imbalance of demand and supply, especially during peak seasons, along with insufficient airline capacity, has further exacerbated the situation.
Despite these challenges, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is tasked with regulating airfare pricing in Nigeria. Airlines are required to obtain NCAA clearance before raising their fares, as mandated by the NCAA Act of 2006, specifically Section 30 (2) (b). This section stipulates that airlines must submit a formal application justifying the fare increase, including a detailed cost analysis and market research.
Unfortunately, recent trends suggest that these regulations may not be strictly enforced. Airlines appear to be raising fares without adequately consulting the NCAA.
