Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), faced intense backlash after celebrating his son’s graduation from a foreign university.
The former Rivers State governor’s social media post sparked outrage among Rivers indigenes and youth activists, who accused him of hypocrisy.
The controversy stems from Wike’s 2015 decision to discontinue the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) scholarship program, which supported Rivers State students studying abroad.
This move left many students stranded and families devastated.
Critics argue that Wike prioritized his son’s foreign education while denying opportunities similar to Rivers youths.

An old video of Wike arguing that courses like law should be studied in Nigeria rather than abroad has resurfaced, further fueling the controversy.
Port Harcourt-based youth activist Charles Jaja condemned Wike’s actions, describing them as unjust and hypocritical.
Jaja questioned why Wike’s son studied law abroad instead of at Rivers State University or another Nigerian institution.
He also accused Wike of injustice for denying Rivers students the chance to complete their education abroad.
